Within the last 7 days Wendy finished her piece, Emanuel came back to re-rehearse his ‘In Translation’ and Sarah has started working on hers. Tripe bill, here we come! It is amazing to think that we are now staring to see the outline of our next show, Renditions, and it is 7 weeks to preview.
If you have been following the last few weeks’ blogs from the dancers, you might know that Wendy’s piece is based on ‘The Tempest’ by Shakespeare. But of course it is her very own take on it, and I think it is such a clever twist! With an original soundscore by John Avery featuring storms and rain, costumes hinting at the old time theatre and dancers talking, Wendy’s piece has such a distinct atmosphere and feel, I think it will be great set against Emanuel’s flowing movement piece.
With Emanuel back in the studio last Monday, the dancers really did get to feel the full extent of working for a repertory company, where you have to be able to work with a variety of choreographers’ styles. I was so impressed with how they managed to get back into the essence of Emanuel’s style after 3 intense weeks with Wendy, and it makes me confident and excited about the triple bill.
So at the end of this week, some of the dancers are having a well deserved rest, while new dancer Dan is accompanied by Bettina in the studio working with choreographer Sarah Michelson. Dan had not joined us yet when we did our research week with Sarah in December, and so is having some time to get up to speed with her wit and demands, half-point work and balances. I was pleased to hear that the Pilates work we have been doing was helping those balances, big thanks to amazing Pilates teacher Anna Martine!
This week I also had time to be in the office, lots of meetings as we are going through a period of organisational change, as well as planning our 20th Anniversary for next year, keep in touch for more info on our plans.
I am also looking forward to going to see Scottish Dance Theatre next week, 11-13 March at The Place. Candoco’s ex-dancer March Brew has co-choreographed a new piece together with Caroline Bowditch and Janet Smith, I am really looking forward to seeing it!
